Dorsy, diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of four, recalls learning to play the guitar by feel, long after the sun went down. “I remember as a child playing till it got dark outside to make sure I could still play guitar without being able to see,” they say.
Now an adult and an active performer, Dorsy continues to pursue music even as their vision deteriorates. “Music has been something that I can continue to do with the closing in of my visual reality,” they explain. In a demo captured at the Grey Eagle venue in Asheville, North Carolina, Dorsy uses the Project Astra prototype on a smartphone to explore a backstage green room.
“What do you see in this green room while I scan around?” Dorsy asks.
The AI, seeing through the phone’s camera, responds in natural language: “I see a sign on the wall in the direction you’re facing. The sign says Wi-Fi network The Grey Eagle and the password is live music.”
Later, Dorsy asks the assistant to help locate a microphone stand among a wall of performance gear. The AI politely requests to turn on the flashlight. When it does, it accurately identifies the stand on a pegboard wall filled with coiled cables.
